Places of Interset In and Around Chhapra

Chirand

Chirand is significant for the discovery of artefats from the Prehsitoric era. It lies at the north back of the Ghaghra River located 11 km south east of Chhapra near Doriganj Bazar, at the north bank of river Ghaghra. Those interested in history will be delighted to find the details of the life of the people who have eixisted 4000 years ago in India.

Aami

Aami is a place of worship for hundreds of people who come to pray at the deep well which if full of water throughout the year. It has a famous temple called Amba Asthan situated about 37 km east of Chhapra and 4 km west of Dighwara. There is an old temple in Aami, known as Amba Asthan, which is visited by numerous worshippers especially during the Navaratras.

Ashoka Pillar

The Ashoka Pillar is located about 33 km from Chhapra the place where Lord Buddha is said to have his made his 13th stop on his way to attaining nirvana. It is belived that it is here that he converted Amrapali, a local courtesan and famous historical figure, into a Buddhist saint. The place is now a tourist attraction for Buddhists. The place is very well-maintained by the Archeological Survey of India.

Marhaura

Marhaura is one of the famous cities of Chhapra with iconic view of Garhdevi Mandir, a very famous temple of Chhapra, known for attracting huge crowd on the occasion of Durga Puja. Devotees have strong belief on this temple and often visit the temple to get the blessings from the deity.

Gautam Asthan

The great epic Ramayan narrates the tale of the rishi Gautam and his unfortunate wife Ahalya whom he cursed into a stone. Apparently she became a human again only when the Lors Rama touched her. The hermitage of Rishi Gautam is believed to be located Gautam Asthan, hence the name, Gautam Asthan, It is about 5 kms from the main city of Chhapra.

Sonepur

Sonepur is the location of the famous Shree Hariharnath temple and the site of the Gaj-Grah battle. Sonepur. At the time of the Karthik Purnima each year, a very famous fair is held that is visited by foreigners as well. This fair or ‘mela’ as is popularly known lasts for almost a fortnight.

Dhorh Ashram

If one is interested in both an archeological and religious site, they would be satisfied with Dhorh Ashram. Located towards north of Parsagarh, it has many artifacts of archeological importance. Along with these, is the ancient temple of Bhagwan Dhadheswarnath located on the bank of the river Gandaki. It boasts of a huge Shiva linga made entirely of stone.

Silhauri

Silhauri is mentioned in both the Shiv Puran and Ramcharitamas. On the occasion of Shivratri, a mela (fair) is organized here during which the devotees of Baba Shilanath come to pay their respects to the god.

How to Reach Chhapra ?

Chhapra is a major town and is also very well-connected to other neighboring towns and cities. It is around 85 kms from the state capital Patna. It is also the nearest airport. Chhapra is accessible through NH 19 (Hajipur-Ghazipur). There are many private buses that provide regular service to the town. Apart from these of course there are the regular cabs and Indicas that provide transport facility.
